This is technically Fire Emblem 2 but release date made it Fire Emblem 3 due to FE Gaiden.
This game is a remake and sequel to Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Tsurugi (Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light). What I mean is the entire first game has been remade as Book 1 while the sequel, Mystery of the Emblem, is Book 2.
From here on I’ll put the translated names first and localized names in [brackets] because this patch is old. The names used are from before the DS remakes localized all the names. No brackets mean it’s the same in both translations
Gameplay is a turn based tactical RPG, a fairly simple one at that. As weapon triangle got introduced in FE 4, this game lacks it. Just move and attack.
Some formulas to remember:
Damage= ATK/MAG minus DEF/RES
Attack Speed (AS) = SPD – Weapon Weight
Double (x2) Attacks = 3+ more AS than your enemy
So the story
Book 1: The War of Darkness
Book 1 focuses on the War of Darkness [War of Shadows] (mostly the same as the original NES game)
In this, the stage is set in the continent of Akaneia [Archanea] where the Durhua [Dolhr] Empire led by the Shadow Dragon Mediuth [Medeus] was defeated by the hero Anri using the holy blade, Falchion.
One hundred years later, Medeus has revived and built an
alliance with the countries of Grunia [Grust] and Macedonia [Medon] and invaded Archanea (the actual country) once again and the country founded by Anri, Aritia [Altea].
In this grand setting, our protagonist, Marth escapes to the island of Talis [Talys]. Over the course of the next few years, he is being protected by country’s king and was lent the eastern fortress of Talys.
At the age of 16, pirates have invaded Talys hoping to plunder its people. Marth decides to protect the people from these filthy sea vermin. On this day begins the legend of the Hero King Marth’s campaign to battle the forces of Medeus, reclaim his homeland of Altea, and liberate the countries of Archanea from the dragon’s rule.
Book 2: The War of Heroes
It has been a one year since Marth defeated the Shadow Dragon Medeus with the holy blade, Falchion, and the Fire Emblem and the war ended, bringing forth peace onto the lands of Akaneia once again.
The War of Shadows devastated every country of the continent and even the holy kingdom of Akaneia [Archanea] is in the middle of restoration.
Marth is king of Aritia [Altea] with his wife Sheeda [Shiida] and Hardin married Nina and he was crowned king of Archanea.,
A rebellion over at Grunia [Grust] has occured and Marth goes to subjugate it under a request by Hardin. At the same time, a
rebellion at Macedonia [Medon] occurs.
What lies they were, Marth is distraught at the sudden channge his companion has gone through. Hardin has ordered the seize of Altea while Marth was on his campaign.
“But why…? Why has he attacked Aritia? What have I done wrong?”
– Marth, as he hurries to his homeland of Aritia [Altea].
Chapter 5, Grunia’s Freedom [The Liberation of Grust]
There are remakes on the Nintendo DS for both Book 1 and Book 2 in English.
Book 1 is just called Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Book 2 is called Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem –
Heroes of Shadow and Light
Edit: This game DOES NOT work on ZSNES 1.42 and 1.51, the battle animations crash. Use Snes9x for perfect compatibility
